Readers may have seen a recent
post in the Church Alive section on christianscience.com. It
includes a helpful reference from last month’s book Miscellaneous Writings. Here’s a snippet and the link to the whole
letter from a branch church member in New York.
“Over
the past two years, our membership
has held a series of meetings to look at each by-law and to think deeply about the purpose of our church. We’ve journeyed through a transformation of thought on church and whom we can embrace as members. One unifying passage from Miscellaneous Writings has helped us move forward in this sometimes challenging endeavor. At her address at the National Convention in Chicago, she said the meeting ". . .has brought us together to minister and to be ministered unto; mutually to aid one another in finding ways and means for helping the whole human family; to quicken and extend interest already felt in a higher mode of medicine; to watch with joy the individual growth of Christian Scientists, and the progress of our common Cause. . ." (see p. 98: 9-16). This purpose of that meeting seemed to be directly applicable to the purpose of our church. It embraces new and experienced Christian Scientists, and we have adopted it into our new by-laws—recently adapted and newcomer friendly!”

How wonderful that Mary Baker
Eddy’s Miscellaneous Writings
continues to offer “canny” crumbs that enlighten the pathways not only of individuals
but also of churches.
