There are lots of chapters about Saul’s hatred of David and
Jonathan’s championship of him. Jonathan didn’t seem to be at all
concerned that he may miss out on being king. This seems to have been one
of Saul’s concerns. I Sam. 20:31: “For as long as the son of Jesse liveth
upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom.”
Chapter 21 gives us a story of David’s men being given hallowed
bread by Ahimelech the priest. This is the “shewbread” which Jesus talks
about in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. It was a precedent for him and the
disciples plucking of the corn on the Sabbath.
