The other side

Julie Swannell

Last month, as we read the book of Mark, a contributor commented that Jesus was always going over to "the other side" (of the lake).  I'd never taken much notice before, but it's been coming back to me a lot since then and I wonder at its possible significance.

Could it be that Jesus needed to get away from the crowds - I'm sure he certainly did.  There were probably lots of reasons for jumping in the boat to go to the other side.  Or maybe he was getting new views...

What about us?  Are we trying to see things from the other person's point of view?  Or are we firmly stuck on "our side" of a discussion?

Some new inspiration about "the other side": I had another look at Joyce Voysey's post about "one on God's side" being a majority and I saw that we seem to take "sides" quite a lot.

Here's an interesting story about "sides": the disciples had been fishing all night and caught absolutely nothing. Jesus tells them to "cast the net on the right side of the ship". Suddenly, the net was so heavy with fish, they couldn't haul them all in. (John 21: 6)

Mary Baker Eddy tells us that the disciples "changed their methods, turned away from material things, and cast their net on the right side" (S&H 35). Elsewhere she writes: "On which side are we fighting?" (S&H 216: 9)

So, when Jesus headed off to "the other side", was he shifting his thought away from the material to the spiritual viewpoint?
