It is Christmas Day on Wednesday this year. This morning, 23rd December 2024, I made a discovery when reading the Christian Science Bible Lesson (found in the Christian Science Quarterly) this week. (The subject is “Christian Science”.)
Not too long ago when the passage from Science and
Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy at page 147:6 came to
my attention (probably it was in the Lesson-Sermon), it seemed to be a
repetition of S&H 107:1. The years mentioned made for a bit of a puzzle: “1866”
for the discovery; “Late in the nineteenth century” for what seemed to be the
same thing.
How wrong I was.
S&H 107:1(Chapter - Science, Theology, Medicine)
In the year
1866, I discovered the Christ Science or divine laws of Life, Truth, and Love,
and named my discovery Christian Science. God had been graciously preparing me
during many years for the reception of this final revelation of the absolute
divine Principle of scientific mental healing.
S&H 147:6 (Chapter - Science, Theology, Medicine)
Late in the
nineteenth century I demonstrated the divine rules of Christian Science. They
were submitted to the broadest practical test, and everywhere, when honestly
applied under circumstances where demonstration was humanly possible, this
Science showed that Truth had lost none of its divine and healing efficacy,
even though centuries had passed away since Jesus practised these rules on the
hills of JudĒ£a and in the valleys of Galilee.
On re-reading the page 147 citation this morning* I thought
of my recent blog post about the Apostle Paul and “Founding”. Ah! Perhaps that
is what is implied in that paragraph. Furthermore, the page 107 citation talks
about discovery—it actually includes the word “discovery.”
So, there we have it. Mary Baker Eddy was the Discoverer
and Founder of Christian Science.
It can be so exciting/uplifting to reach such a conclusion
in one’s study of Christian Science.
I hope readers will return of the blog to read the one
entitled “Paul:
Church Founder.”
