Moses flees to Midian
What a long way Moses travelled when he "fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian" (Exodus 2: 15). No wonder he "sat down by a well" at that point! The hymnal has two hymns that I have found that give us an inkling of Moses' story: hymns 385 and 281. I don't believe I've have ever sung 281, but there's always a first time! Its message (adapted by Harriet Auber from the Bible) is lovely:He has given the cloud by day,
Given the moving fire by night;
Guides His Israel on their way
From the darkness into light.
He it is who grants us
Sure retreat and refuge nigh.
Light of dawn leads us on,
'Tis the dayspring from on high.
Sir Walter Scott's verses in hymn 385 are well known, but I was interested to ponder the second verse again:
And present still, though oft unseen
When brightly shines the prosperous day,
Be thoughts of Thee a cloudy screen
To temper the deceitful ray.
