It looks like the compilers of
the Hymnal have thought of every need that a Christian Scientist may have as
they work for church. For instance, the words of Hymn 204 ("O Father, Thy kingdom is come upon earth") have been
“modified for the sake of the music, and also with reference to the work of
Christian Science lecturers” - my emphasis.
Hymn 211* has music without
bars! There is a remarkable note about this in Hymnal Notes.
Phillips Brooks, the author of
the words of Hymn 222/3, “O little town of Bethlehem,” is quoted as saying that
“…prayer is not conquering God’s reluctance, but availing ourselves of His
willingness.”
One is impressed with the
enormous contribution German music has brought to church music.

Ed. *This setting of Mrs. Eddy's poem "Mother's Evening Prayer" works very well as a solo, but the Hymnal Notes say that "large congregations sing it easily"!
